Rick
Strassman
Rick Strassman is a native of Los Angeles and
holds degrees from Stanford University (BS with
Honors in Biology) and the Albert Einstein College
of Medicine, Yeshiva University (MD with Honors).
Dr. Strassman took his internship and general
psychiatry residency at the University of California
Davis Medical Center in Sacramento and received
the Sandoz Award for outstanding graduate resident
in 1981. His has held a fellowship in clinical
psychopharmacology research at the University
of California San Diego and was Professor of Psychiatry
for eleven years at the University of New Mexico.
After completing his clinical research on the
function of the pineal hormone melatonin, he became
the first person in over 20 years to conduct US
government-funded clinical research involving
the use of psychedelic drugs. Dr. Strassman has
published 30 peer-reviewed scientific papers and
has served as a reviewer for several psychiatric
research journals. He is also the author of DMT:
The Spirit Molecule. He has been a consultant
to the US Food and Drug Administration, National
Institute on Drug Abuse, Veterans' Administration
Hospitals, Social Security Administration, and
other state and local agencies. He currently practices
general psychiatry in Taos New Mexico and is Clinical
Associate Professor of Psychiatry in the UNM School
